Marks to Percentage Calculator

Convert your marks into a percentage and see how many marks you need to reach a target percentage.

How it works

Enter marks obtained and total marks to get the percentage. If you add a target percentage, the tool also shows the marks required to reach it.

Example

412 marks out of 500 gives 82.40%. To reach 85% you would need 425 marks, which is 13 marks more.

Frequently asked questions

How is percentage calculated?

Percentage = marks obtained divided by total marks, multiplied by 100.

Can I use it for aggregate marks across subjects?

Yes. Add up your marks and the total marks of all subjects, then enter the two totals.

Why does my board show a different figure?

Some boards round marks or use best-of-five subjects. Use the rule printed on your marksheet.

The formulas behind the tool

Percentage = (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100. Marks needed for a target = (target percentage ÷ 100) × total marks, minus the marks you already have.

More worked examples

  • You scored 412 out of 500: 412 ÷ 500 × 100 = 82.40%.
  • You want 85% overall out of 500: 0.85 × 500 = 425 marks, so you need 13 more marks than 412.
  • Aggregate across semesters: add all marks obtained and all maximum marks first, then divide. Do not average the semester percentages unless the maximum marks are equal.

Where percentage matters

Many scholarships, admissions and job notifications set a minimum percentage, for example 60% in graduation or 75% in class 12. Some count only the best subjects, and some round differently, so check how your institution or the notification calculates it. Our scholarship guide and merit-based scholarships guide list typical cut-offs.

Tips

  • Use marks from the final mark sheet, not provisional ones, when you can.
  • Check whether grace marks or optional subjects are included.
  • Keep a margin above the minimum in case of rounding rules.

This tool gives an estimate for planning. Always confirm final figures and rules with the official notification.
